Wow! Time flies. And it’s almost time for Girls Tryouts. We have a terrific and talented coaching staff again this year including many long-time members and some new faces. Here’s a quick introduction to some of those new and returning members of the Pacific Rim coaching staff.
Anna Storelli has eight years coaching experience and 16 years as a player, including club, high school and college levels. At Saint Mary’s College High School, she helped lead the Panthers to a Northern Coast Championship and a second place finish in the State Championship. Anna will assistant coach the U12 Storm team with long-time Pacific Rim coach Peter Crowley.
Melissa (Mel) Ralls is another multi-talented, multi-sport athlete and coach. She played and coached at Firebaugh High School where she was named Female Athlete of the Year, and at Merced College as an outside hitter. This will be her seventh season coaching volleyball. In addition to volleyball, she plays and coaches basketball and softball. She’ll lead the U13 Waves.
Rachel Phillips joins Pacific Rim having coached five years at Berkeley High School. She’s currently the women’s varsity assistant coach at Saint Mary’s College High School. Prior to joining Pacific Rim, she coached for Golden Bear Volleyball Club for six years and played professional beach volleyball in Europe. She’ll coach the U14 Hurricanes.
Sophie Lu has nine years of playing experience and comes to Pacific Rim from the East Coast. She’s currently the head coach for Albany High School girls freshman team and a multi-sport athlete. In addition to volleyball, she’s a cross country runner and ultimate Frisbee fanatic. She’ll assistant coach the U15 Thunder with Joe Peacock. Joe helped coach the Boys National Championship U17 team last year and lead his U14 girls team to several top finishes including a first place at Far Westerns (Bronze Division).
Andrew Balsz grew up playing volleyball on the beaches and indoor courts of Southern California. He went to Saint Mary’s College and now coaches the university’s womens club team. He’ll join club director Roger Worsley on the U15 Lightning team.
Jerry Chance learned the game of volleyball 30 years ago in his home country of Surinam. He’s been playing ever since – competing in tournaments in Northern California — and loves sharing his passion for the game with others. In addition to playing, he also coordinates a grass league for CPVG. He’ll work with standout 20-year coaching veteran Angela Cuellar on the U16 Typhoons.
Other returning coaches this season include: Dipen Patel, who coached the U16 Typhoons to a first place finish at Far Westerns (No Dinx Division) last year; Cornelius Flintroy, current assistant coach on Pacific Rim’s U17 boys team; Christine Worsley, who will assist with the U13 Surf; and Matt Williams, who also coaches volleyball at Castro Valley High School.
